What Data We Collect

When you use the calculator, we collect the inputs you provide:

  • Salary and expected salary growth
  • Loan balance(s)
  • Loan plan type (Plan 1, 2, 4, 5, Postgraduate)
  • Year you started repaying
  • Your age

We also collect minimal technical data required to operate the service, such as timestamps of submissions.

What We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address (unless you contact us directly)
  • Account credentials or passwords
  • Payment or bank details
  • Your precise location

Why We Collect This Data

We use the data you provide for two purposes:

  1. Operating the calculator — to calculate your estimated repayments and show you results
  2. Understanding policy impacts — to analyse, in aggregate, how student loan policies (such as threshold freezes) affect borrowers

We do not use your data for marketing, advertising, or profiling.

Legal Basis for Processing

We process your data under legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR). Our legitimate interests are:

  • Providing a useful calculator tool to help borrowers understand their loans
  • Conducting research into the effects of student loan policy on UK graduates

We have assessed that these interests do not override your rights, given the limited and non-sensitive nature of the data collected.

How We Store Your Data

Calculator submissions are stored using Supabase, a database service. Data is stored on servers located in the European Union.

We do not sell your data or share it with third parties for marketing purposes.

How Long We Keep Your Data

  • Raw submissions: retained for up to 12 months, then deleted
  • Aggregated statistics: may be retained longer (these contain no individual-level data)

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Deletion — request that we delete your data
  • Object — object to our processing of your data
  • Complain — lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hm@harry-m.org.

Cookies and Tracking

This website does not use cookies or tracking technologies. We do not use analytics services, advertising pixels, or session tracking.

We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes.
